Astrakhan and the Volga River

1.1 Top Three: Tim passing through the city of Astrakhan over the Volga river- first time in such a big city on the horses! Tim with Liudmilla Kiseleva (left) and Inna (right.) Liudmilla helped Tim immensely with his arrival in Russia and escort through the city. Inna, the local journalist, was also very supportive. They became friends in a short time. This photo was taken just before my horses escaped into the night. The three policeman who helped me search for my horses all noght when they ran away with all my equipment near Astrakhan. Tim overnighted in the station, and Nikolai (left) woke early woth good news- he had had a dream about catching a red, grey, and black fish. He was therefore sure that we would find the horses which we did! Zagir's family who took Tim in over Christmas after recovering from the horse escape disaster, Zagir and his family are from Dagestan. Tim at the school in Mirni. Here out of the ninety students just one was Russian- the rest kazaks Chechens, and Dagestanis. The Volga freezing up as Tim heads south.
